Sandvik Coromant has developed a new assortment of indexable insert gear milling cutters, a development that has taken place in close cooperation with our customers. Essential engineering know-how together with a long experience in the metal cutting area is a guarantee that a tool solution suits your needs.
During the past few years a completely new insert generation has been introduced. Developments in insert substrates, coating materials, coating manufacturing, and post processes provide higher metal-removal rates with longer tool life. These new gear milling tools will give all the performance and benefits needed to increase production levels, that could not be possible with conventional HSS cutters.
With Sandvik Coromant as your partner, you get all the experience to optimize your overall manufacturing and reduce the cost per component.
Comparison: HSS/Carbide Tools
About 90 percent of all gear wheel manufacturing involves metal cutting. The potential for increased productivity is therefore essential for every gear manufacturer. HSS cutters have dominated the gear milling area for many years. A downside with these cutters is that machining rates and tool life often are limited.
During the past few years, the trend is that indexable carbide insert cutters are replacing HSS cutters in many applications. With the new generation of cutters, cutting data can be higher and the cost per machined gear wheel can be reduced considerably.
By switching from a HSS cutter to an indexable carbide insert hob, a customer could reduce the cutting time by 50 percent and tool life was more than doubled. The customer in question was able to release more than 7,000 hours of machine time.

Dear Sirs,
My name is Hatzopoulos Yannis. I am MSC Mechanical Enginner AUTH and I
manufacture gear pumps in Thessaloniki Greece. Up to this moment the meterial of gears was ductile iron GG 25. We started serious production ( regarding number of gears cut) of gears made of
St 52-3. Our hob HSS cutters seem to get tired or even better seem to get close to the end of their lifes. I would like you to suggest a solution of our problem. Please have in mind that we cut from 200 to 300 gears of this material per year. The rest of its specs are : M12, 20 degrees, 160 mm diameter.
Best Regards
