“Review my processes and make sure I am getting the most for my tooling spend”
Bill Tisdall, Development and Turning Products Manager
As the economy continues to get stronger many processes are put into place hastily or often existing processes are ignored, driven by the need to “get parts out the door”. But at the end of the year, it’s an excellent time to review the processes in your shop to make sure you are getting the most out of your tooling. There are good reasons to use a CNMG insert in turning: the ability to turn to a shoulder, components or set-ups prone to vibration. However, recognize that this solution does not provide the best productivity, process security or tool life.
Whenever possible use a tool that provides a larger lead angle such as a square insert in a 45 degree lead tool or a round insert. The lead angle of the tool (or the insert as it enters the part provides better protection against notch wear, and the ability to increase your feed rate. Furthermore, proper programming techniques will extend the life of the tool and eliminate unnecessary down time due to insert failure. This all results in an optimized process that will allow you to get parts out of the door quicker and at less cost.
